Apprentice, the
a US television programme in which a group of people compete to win the prize of a high-paying job, working for the rich American businessman Donald Trump. The people on the show all stay in one apartment in New York City and work in teams doing jobs that test their ability to be an entrepreneur (=someone who starts a new business or arranges business deals in order to make money). People are judged on how well they do each job. Those who do badly are told to leave until there is a final winner. A British version of the show was first broadcast in 2005. In the programme the apprentices compete for a job in one of the companies owned by Sir Alan Sugar, a rich British businessman. At the end of each programme he points to the loser and says ‘You’re fired!’
